Your Itinerary
DAY 1 UK/Amman
Fly to Amman for our three-night stay at the 4-star Amman International Hotel or similar.
DAY 2 Amman, Bethany & the Dead Sea
Amman can trace its history as far back as 3500 BC, although today Roman remains are more in evidence. We see the magnificent Roman Theatre, which once held 6,000 spectators, and the hilltop Citadel. Driving out of the city, we visit Bethany to see the spot where it is believed Christ was baptised by John the Baptist, and on to the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth. Be sure to take a dip – or float – in the mineral-rich waters, reputed to have great therapeutic benefits.
DAY 3 Jerash & Gadara
North of Amman, we visit the wonderfully preserved city of Jerash. We explore the 15,000-seat Hippodrome, the glorious Temple of Zeus and Triumphal Arch before continuing to the ancient Greco-Roman city of Gadara to take in the desert panorama with the lake of Tiberias, the Jordan Valley and Golan Heights stretching out before our eyes.
DAY 4 The Kings’ Highway to Kerak
Today we drive south along the Kings’ Highway, a 5,000-year-old road passing through spectacular scenery and alongside ancient towns and castles. At Madaba we step inside St George’s Church to see the fabulous map of the Holy Land, laid out in mosaics around AD 560. We continue to Mt Nebo, from where Moses sighted the Promised Land, then south to Kerak to see the ruins of the greatest of the Crusader Citadels. The journey’s end is Petra, our base for the next two nights.
DAY 5 Petra
The approach to the rose-red city adds to its mystique as we make our way through the Siq, a narrow gorge with towering sandstone walls. The final turn reveals the splendid facade of the Treasury, hewn from the cliffs. Further exploration will show us simple cave dwellings, royal tombs and grand monuments built by the Romans following their conquest of the city in AD 106.
DAY 6 Wadi Rum
Today we travel by 4x4 through the awesome landscapes of Wadi Rum. Against a backdrop of desert sands and wind-carved sandstone cliffs and rock formations, we take tea with nomadic Bedouins.
For those guests not adding an extension to their holiday we travel back to Amman, where you will enjoy a farewell dinner in Kan Zaman village. We will stay overnight at the 4-star Amman International Hotel or similar.
DAY 7 Amman/UK
We fly back to the UK today.
