22 DECEMBER London/Amman
Fly to Amman and transfer to the Amman International Hotel for a threenight stay.
23 DECEMBER Amman & Bethany
Amman, Jordan’s capital, was originally built on seven hills. The city’s history goes back some 3,500 years, resulting in a wealth of historic sights to discover. Our tour of the city features the impressive Citadel – situated on one of the highest hills in the city, this magnificent monument offers a splendid view of the old city. We also pay a visit to the fascinating Archaeological and Folkloric Museums, the Roman Theatre and King Abdullah Mosque.
Driving out of the city, we visit Bethany to see the place where John the Baptist is believed to have baptised Jesus Christ, known as Al-Maghtas in Arabic. This is one of the most significant archaeological and religious discoveries of recent times.
CHRISTMAS EVE Jerash & Um Qeis
North of Amman we visit the wonderfully preserved city of Jerash, one of the Decapolis, the ten Roman commercial cities in the Middle East. Built on a trading route to the Orient, its former wealth is evident in its resplendent streets, marketplace, baths and theatres. Explore the 15,000-seat Hippodrome, the glorious Temple of Zeus and the Triumphal Arch before continuing to Um Qeis, the ancient Greco-Roman city of Gadara, to take in the panoramic view overlooking the lake of Tiberias, the Jordan Valley and Golan Heights. We return to the Amman International Hotel for dinner this evening.
CHRISTMAS DAY The Kings’ Highway to Kerak
This morning we drive south along the King’s Highway, a 5,000-year-old road passing through spectacular scenery and alongside ancient towns and castles. At Madaba we step inside St George’s Church to see the fabulous map of the Holy land, laid out in mosaic around AD 560. Nearby we can take the opportunity to stand on Mount Nebo, from where Moses first sighted the Promised Land before we continue south to Kerak to see the ruins of one of the greatest Crusader castles. We then proceed to the incredible Movenpick Nabatean Castle at the ancient city of Petra for a two-night stay.
BOXING DAY Petra
Today brings what has to be the highlight of our holiday – a full-day visit to Petra, one of the greatest archaeological sites in the world. We approach the rose-red city on horseback or if you prefer, by carriage, and ride to the Siq, a narrow defile that forms the entrance to the city. The final turn reveals the splendid facade of the Treasury, hewn from the iron-rich cliffs. Further exploration of this ancient capital of the Nabateans will show us simple cave dwellings, royal tombs and the grand monuments built by the Romans after their conquest of the city in AD 106, including the vast amphitheatre.
27 DECEMBER Wadi Rum
Today we travel through the awesome scenery of Wadi Rum - the ‘Valley of the Moon’ - the majestic landscape that so inspired Lawrence of Arabia. We explore this splendid desert in the company of the local Bedouins, who will take you by 4x4 vehicles through the valley to the great mountain of Al Khazali. We then take lunch in the desert with the Bedouin while enjoying traditional music. We continue to the 5-star Moevenpick Resort on the banks of the Dead Sea for a two-night stay.
28 DECEMBER The Dead Sea
Enjoy a full day of relaxation on the shores of the Dead Sea, a year-round sunspot thanks to its location about 400 metres below sea level. Why not indulge yourself with a variety of treatments at the hotel’s spa centre (at a supplement).
29 DECEMBER Amman/London
We transfer to Amman airport for the homeward flight. Please note: This tour involves a considerable amount of walking over uneven terrain and therefore may not be suitable for those with walking difficulties. For more information please call our Holiday Booking Advisors.

Regional connecting flights to London from only £69
If you can’t fly direct to your destination from your local airport (see individual holiday details), usually you will have the choice of taking a regional connecting flight to Heathrow or Gatwick from as little as £69 per person return. If your connecting flight and your flight from Gatwick or Heathrow is with British Airways or British Midland, your luggage will automatically be checked through to your final destination, so there’s no need to collect or check your luggage in twice.

Make your own way and save up to £150 per person
