The small port of Lexioes in Portugal is the gateway to Oporto, situated on the bank of the Douro River and the Atlantic Ocean. The centre is a rich mixture of mediaeval and 18th-century architecture. If you like wine, you’ll be at home here – across the Douro is the port wine capital of the world, Vila Nova de Gaia.

MONDAY 22ND CRUISING AT SEA

TUESDAY 23RD CASABLANCA
We arrive on the coast of North Africa at the town immortalised by Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. Today you will find an eclectic mix of old and new. Fabulous shore excursions will take you to the medina and souks of Marrakech or to Rabat, the fascinating capital of Morocco.

WEDNESDAY 24TH GIBRALTAR
This little piece of Britain, known as ‘the rock’, on the southern coast of Spain is famous for its colony of Barbary apes. Perhaps browse in the shops and have a drink in the pubs on Main Street and Irish street, or take a cable car to enjoy magnificent views of nearby Africa.

THURSDAY 25TH CADIZ
We return to mainland Europe and visit one of Spain’s most historic cities. Take a stroll through the narrow streets to see the Santo Domingo Church, the old Royal Prison, the ancient roman theatre and splendid town hall. Perhaps join us on a guided tour of the city, or travel further afield to Jerez, the home of sherry, for a tasting of this famous tipple.

FRIDAY 26TH CRUISING AT SEA

SATURDAY 27TH LA CORUNA
The artist Picasso chose to live in La Coruna, surrounded by the natural beauty of Galicia in Spain’s northwest corner and there are many reminders of the great painter. Perhaps pay a visit to the magnificent 12thcentury cathedral at Santiago de Compostela.
