Your Itinerary
DAY 1 UK/Malaga
We fly from a choice of regional airports to Malaga and take the short transfer to our superb 4-star hotel in Antequera for seven nights on a half board basis.
DAY 2 Antequera, El Torcal & the Dolmens
The history of Antequera goes back almost 5,000 years, so there’s plenty to discover. Explore the recently excavated Roman baths, the magnificent Renaissance Church of Santa Maria la Mayor, and the Arch of the Giants, which leads up to the 13th-century Moorish castle. Our optional excursion today will show us the highlights of the town and visit El Torcal, a stunning national park with an array of rare plants and animals. We continue to the Dolmens, megalithic mass tombs made of huge slabs of rock dating back 4,500 years. Many hundreds of skeletons were found in the inner chamber when they were excavated in the early 1900s.
DAY 3 Granada & the Alhambra Palace
No tour to Andalucia is complete without a visit to Granada and the awe-inspiring spectacle of the Alhambra Palace. Built by the Moors in the 13th and 14th centuries on a hill overlooking Granada, it is a most magnificent complex of pink-stone courtyards, pools and fountains, halls and patios. This was the ruling caliphs’ idea of paradise on earth and although you may have seen countless photographs, none can do justice to such a breathtaking sight. There will be a little free time to explore Granada itself, one of Andalucia’s most beautiful cities.
DAY 4 Malaga
A free day allows you to make the most of the hotel’s excellent facilities. But with so much to discover in Andalucia, you may choose to join our optional excursion to Malaga. We explore this cosmopolitan city, set on a beautiful bay of the Mediterranean, and enjoy fantastic views from the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro, two Moorish citadels. Malaga is proud to be the birthplace of Picasso and you will also have the opportunity to visit the excellent Picasso Museum.
DAY 5 Cordoba
One of Europe’s most fascinating cities, Cordoba is beautifully set on a bend of the River Guadalquivir and offers magnificent sightseeing opportunities. The highlight of our day will be a visit to the Great Mosque. Built in the 8th century, when Cordoba was the capital of the Moorish kingdom of El Andalus, the dazzling interior includes over 850 columns of jasper, marble and granite. The mosque was considered so spectacular that it was left standing when the Christians reconquered in the 13th century, and a cathedral was built in the midst of the rows of arches. From here enjoy a stroll through the picturesque Jewish quarter, a labyrinth of winding narrow streets, shady flower-filled courtyards and picturesque squares.
DAY 6 Seville
Our final included excursion takes us to the regional capital and atmospheric city of Seville. This is the city of Carmen, Don Juan and Figaro and is a delight to explore. Stroll through the Barrio Santa Cruz, with its white houses and flower-bedecked balconies; admire the enormous Gothic cathedral, which took 125 years to complete; and discover the Plaza de Espana, a magnificent semi-circular complex with monumental staircases, fountains and a beautifully tiled alcove for each of the provinces of Spain – a quite spectacular sight.
DAY 7 Ronda
Don’t miss our optional visit to Ronda today. Steeped in history, the town stands on a towering plateau and is divided by a precipitous gorge over 600 feet deep. El Tajo, as the gorge is known, is spanned by an 18th-century stone bridge, the Puente Nuevo, from where you can peer down into the gorge to the waters of the River Guadalevin far below. El Mercadillo, the newer 18th-century part of town, is home to one of the most beautiful bull rings in Spain; while the older southern side is a typical pueblo blanco – enjoy a stroll through cobbled alleys lined with traditional whitewashed houses.
DAY 8 Malaga/UK
We return to Malaga airport for the homeward flight.
