Your Itinerary

DAY 1 UK/STOCKHOLM
We fly to Stockholm and transfer to our hotel for a two-night stay. There is some free time this afternoon to explore this delightful city. Perhaps take a walk through the old town, Gamla Stan, a charming area of cobbled streets lined with merchants’ houses.

DAY 2 STOCKHOLM
Our included excursion takes us to see the sights of Stockholm today. This water city has historic buildings at every turn and a captivating atmosphere. We’ll see the massive Royal Palace; the City Hall, site of the annual Nobel Prize Banquet in the misnamed Blue Hall (it is in fact red!); the grand Parliament Buildings; the Royal Theatre; and the cathedral with its glorious baroque interior. Also included is a visit to the Vasa Museum, home to the well preserved Vasa warship which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was recovered 333 years later.

DAY 3 STOCKHOLM & HELSINKI
We have some free time this morning to further explore the city. Perhaps indulge in some shopping in the city centre, take a cruise on the canals to Drottningholm Castle or visit Skansen, an open air museum where over 100 old houses, farms and other buildings from all over Sweden have been moved to create an authentic taste of life here from the 18th century onwards. This afternoon we transfer to the ferry terminal to travel overnight to Helsinki, cruising between the islands that lie between these two cities.

DAY 4 HELSINKI
The Finnish capital, Helsinki, is a mixture of old and new with historic buildings sitting comfortable beside modern ones. We enjoy a sightseeing tour today, taking in the Sibelius Monument, Senate Square and the Parliament building.

DAY 5 ST PETERSBURG
This morning we embark on our train journey from Helsinki to St Petersburg. Admire the delightful Russian scenery as it passes by your window. We arrive in the spectacular city of St Petersburg later this afternoon and transfer to our hotel for a three-night stay.

DAY 6 ST PETERSBURG
Founded by Peter the Great at the turn of the 18th century as the new Russian capital, St Petersburg is a splendid city of rivers and canals, broad avenues, ornate baroque palaces and magnificent cathedrals. Our sightseeing today includes a visit to St Isaac’s Cathedral and the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, whose cemetery is the final resting place of many important Russian figures, including Tchaikovsky.

DAY 7 ST PETERSBURG
There’s so much to see in St Petersburg that every visitor to this incredible city is sure to be hypnotised by the gracefulness of the architecture. Placid canals contrast with haunting buildings, and vast squares tell of a time long ago. Our sightseeing continues today with a visit to the Hermitage Museum, one of the world’s largest and greatest art galleries. Housed in the beautiful Winter Palace, it is home to some two million works of art. This afternoon is at leisure for you to make your own discoveries in this fascinating city. Perhaps visit the Peter and Paul Fortress, which was designed to be a defence against advances from the Neva River and served as an important building for all the Russian tsars. Or the Summer Palace, which was the private residence of Peter the Great. There is also the opportunity to attend a folklore performance tonight.

DAY 8 ST PETERSBURG & MOSCOW
Today we venture into the countryside surrounding the city and head to Pushkin, where the Catherine Palace is. Built in flamboyant baroque style with an amazing 300-metre-long facade, you are sure to be amazed by it. We also pay a visit to the Amber Room, which is a room decorated entirely with amber and gold leaf and a spectacular sight to see. We embark on the next leg of our rail journey this afternoon as we board the Aurora train and travel towards Moscow where we stay for the next two nights.

DAY 9 MOSCOW
Today’s guided tour of the city takes in the famed Bolshoi Theatre, Red Square, St Basil’s Cathedral with its eight colourful onion domes, the famous GUM department store and more. We then visit the oldest part of the city, the red-brick Kremlin surrounded by huge battlements. Here we see some of the wonderful cathedrals and palaces and tour inside the Armoury.

DAY 10 MOSCOW/UK
Some free time this morning for shopping or sightseeing before transferring to the airport for the homeward flight.
