Your Itinerary
DAY 1 UK/St Petersburg
Fly to St Petersburg and transfer to your hotel.
DAY 2 St Petersburg
Founded by Peter the Great at the turn of the 18th century as the new Russian capital, St Petersburg is a splendid city of rivers and canals, broad avenues, ornate baroque palaces and magnificent cathedrals. Our sightseeing begins with a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress, which was the first major building in the new city to be erected. It was designed to be a defence against advances from the Neva River and served as an important building for all the Russian tsars.
The Summer Palace is the next place we visit. This was one of the earliest and most modest palaces of the city, and was the private residence of Peter the Great. The Menshikov Palace was built under the orders of Alexander Menshikov – a good friend of Peter the Great and later Governor General of the city, and we pay a visit here next. Finally, we visit the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, whose cemetery is the final resting place of many important Russian figures, including Tchaikovsky.
DAY 3 St Petersburg
There’s so much to see in St Petersburg that every visitor to this incredible city is sure to be hypnotised by the gracefulness of the architecture. Placid canals contrast with haunting buildings, and vast squares tell of a time long ago. Our sightseeing continues today with a visit to St Isaac’s Cathedral, the Smolny Institute and the Strelka, for lovely views across the River Neva. We continue to the Church on Spilled Blood, built as a memorial to Alexander II who was murdered here, and end the day at the Russian Museum, which showcases a fine collection of artefacts, icons and Russian art.
DAY 4 The Hermitage
No visit to St Petersburg would be complete without seeing the Hermitage, one of the world’s largest and greatest art galleries. Housed in the beautiful Winter Palace, it is home to some two million works of art. Along with Roman and Greek art, the collection houses paintings from the Italian Renaissance and French Impressionist eras, as well as work from some of the great artists – Picasso, Rembrandt and Matisse. The collection began life as a private group of works, obtained by Peter the Great on his travels.
Successive rulers then expanded the collection and it is now world-renowned. Even the building the collection is housed in is a work of art to be admired, with its intricately decorated interior and its exterior of outstanding architectural detail. There is so much to see here that you can only scratch the surface of this incredible place, but it is sure to leave you in awe. After an introductory morning tour, you are free to make your own discoveries.
DAY 5 Pavlovsk, Pushkin & Alexander Palace
We venture into the countryside today to visit Pavlovsk, designed as a private residence for Catherine the Great’s son. We continue to Pushkin, where we visit the Catherine Palace, built in flamboyant baroque style – the 300-metre-long facade is amazing. Our final visit of the day is to the Alexander Palace, the residence of Russia’s last tsar.
DAY 6 St Petersburg/Moscow
This morning we visit the magnificent coastal palace of Peterhof. Beautiful formal gardens surround the palace with terraces and cascading waterfalls, fountains and elegant statues covered in gold. Enjoy an included lunch. Following dinner on day 6 we take the overnight train to Moscow.
DAY 7 Moscow
From its historic architecture to its rich and varied cultural and spiritual heritage, Moscow is a vibrant city just waiting to be explored. We enjoy an included city tour on arrival and check in for three nights’ half board accommodation at the excellent 5-star Swissotel Krasnye Holmy Hotel in the afternoon.
DAY 8 Moscow
A second city tour is included this morning and the rest of the day is free.
DAY 9 Moscow
The rest of your stay is free for you to make your own discoveries in the Russian capital.
