Your Itinerary
DAY 1 UK/Bergen
We fly to Bergen and transfer to our hotel for one night on a bed and breakfast basis.
DAY 2 Leikanger
Prepare yourself for some amazing scenery as we leave Bergen and journey by coach via the Hardangerfjord to Voss and then on to Leikanger on the shores of the beautiful Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in the world. We check in to our hotel for five nights on a half board basis.
DAY 3 Sogndal, Kaupanger Stave Church & Laerdal
We discover some of the history and traditions of Norway today. Our morning begins with a drive along the shores of the tranquil Sognefjord to reach the Sogndal open-air folk museum. We then take the ferry across the Sognefjord to Laerdal and the Norwegian Wild Salmon Centre, where we learn all about salmon rearing. We also visit the Borgund stave church in Laerdal. Over 1,000 stave churches were built in Norway between 1100 and 1300 and yet less than 30 survive today.
DAY 4 Jostedals Glacier & Fjaerland
We drive over the spectacular Gauler Pass before arriving at the incredible Jostedalsbreen Glacier. Nothing can prepare you for the sheer scale and breathtaking beauty of the vast glacier, the largest in mainland Europe. Once we’ve witnessed the glacier for real, we’ll be able to learn more about it at the Norwegian Glacier Museum. We also make a stop in Fjaerland, a charming little village with a magnificent panorama of blue glaciers and towering mountains, also home to the Norwegian Book Town. After an independent lunch, we take to the water for a scenic boat trip back to Leikanger.
Tonight we experience an evening of traditional Norwegian fare in the company of a local farmer who will be delighted to give us a tour of Hengjatunet Farm, followed by a dinner of delicious local dishes.
DAY 5 Leikanger
We have a free day, the ideal opportunity to relax at the hotel and enjoy its idyllic setting or to join an optional guided walk through the surrounding countryside to discover the abundant flora and fauna. You’ll be rewarded with a tasting of cider and lefse, a local baked speciality, for your efforts.
DAY 6 Fjord Cruise & Flam Scenic Railway
The best way to appreciate the stunning fjord scenery is from the water, and today we are treated to an unforgettable four-hour cruise on the Sognefjord, with its steep mountain cliffs, glaciers and snow-capped peaks. Look out for seals and other wildlife as we enter the amazingly narrow Naeroyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We pass traditional fjord-side farms and small hamlets on the Aurlandsfjord before reaching Flam, nestling between precipitous mountain slopes and cascading waterfalls.
A journey aboard the Flam scenic railway is a must for any visitor to this part of Norway. One of the engineering wonders of the world, the train climbs 862 metres in just 20 kilometres as it twists around the mountainside of the Myrdal Valley. Admire the views from the top before we descend via the same route and rejoin the ship at Flam for the cruise back to Leikanger.
DAY 7 Express Boat to Bergen
Leaving Leikanger this morning, we take the Express Boat to Bergen for our final night. The city’s Bryggen district is the perfect place to start our discoveries this afternoon. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the colourfully painted and gabled former warehouses are home to workshops, craft stores and friendly cafes. If you want to capture the real atmosphere of Bergen, visit the fish and flower markets – you’ll find a tempting array of produce; mounds of freshly caught shrimps, rows of red lobster and all kinds of salmon, caviar, fruit and flowers – a feast for the palate and eye. Our optional city sightseeing tour will ensure you don’t miss a thing, including Troldhaugen, the birthplace of Edvard Grieg, one of Norway’s greatest composers.
DAY 8 Bergen/UK
We transfer to Bergen airport for the homeward flight.
Please note: If timings for scheduled sailings change, the itinerary will be adjusted accordingly.
