Your Itinerary
DAY 1 UK/Bologna
We fly to Bologna, meet our Tour Manager and transfer to Ravenna and our hotel for the first three nights. Dinner is included at the hotel this evening.
DAY 2 Ravenna
An elegant city with a vibrant centre, stylish shops and rich cultural heritage, Ravenna is best known for its outstanding mosaics, created during its time as capital of the Byzantine Empire. This morning we include a city tour taking in some of these extraordinary art treasures. We start at the 6th-century churches of San Vitale and Sant’Apollinaire Nuovo; their simple brick exteriors belying the brilliant mosaics within. The intricate detail and bright colours of the well-preserved mosaics are quite staggering.
We continue to the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and the School of Mosaic Art, where this ancient art form is still practised. This afternoon we visit the Church of St Appollinaire in Classe, just outside the city. This famous church was built on the site where St Appollinaire, the first bishop and martyr of the city, was buried. The central nave leads to the apse where exceptional mosaics, rich in gold and turquoise, depict the saint surrounded on either side by a row of 12 lambs, symbolic of the Apostles.
DAY 3 Ferrara
Today’s included excursion takes us to Ferrara on the banks of the River Po. Ruled by the Este family for over 300 years, the city has a colourful history and a wealth of mediaeval and Renaissance treasures to discover. Dominating the skyline is the huge mediaeval Castello Estense, a moated castle and the seat of the Este family. Encircled by huge mediaeval walls, the city also boasts long broad avenues lined with Renaissance palazzi and a 12th-century cathedral. A walking tour in the company of a local guide is included.
DAY 4 Bologna & Correggio
We leave Ravenna this morning and spend the day in Bologna, Italy’s gastronomic capital and one of its most beautiful cities. Mediaeval streets spread out from the central Piazza Maggiore and sienna-coloured buildings rise from marble pavements. We have included a walking tour followed by an apperitivo with local snacks in one of the many inviting bars. Tortellini, bolognese and mortadella sausage are amongst the local specialities.
There’ll be time to explore the town independently before we continue our journey to the little town of Correggio, famous as the birthplace of the 16th-century artist who took his name from the town. We spend four nights at our hotel with dinner included in the hotel on one evening. We have included one dinner at a local restaurant and the final two nights will be free to allow you to make your own choice of restaurants in the town.
DAY 5 Parma
Our included excursion takes us to Parma, perhaps best known for its prosciutto ham and Parma violet sweets, but also home to fine Renaissance and Romanesque buildings. Chief amongst its attractions are the frescoed Duomo, the spectacular pink marble baptistery, and the Palazzo della Pilotta, which displays fine art and sculpture collections. We enjoy a guided tour of the town before visiting a producer of the local Parmiggiano Reggiano or parmesan cheese. We also visit a Balsamic vinegar distillery near Modena.
DAY 6 Mantua
The beautiful mediaeval town of Mantua is one of Italy’s hidden gems. At the heart of the city is a wonderful Old Town and the imposing Ducal palace, the home of the Gonzaga dynasty who ruled the city for nearly four centuries. Avid art collectors, they commissioned many works by Renaissance artist, Mantegna. We enjoy a tour of the town in the company of a local guide followed by free time to make your own discoveries.
DAY 7 Modena & the Land of Ferrari
One of Italy’s wealthiest towns, Modena possesses many great art treasures, but is perhaps most famous for its world renowned exports including Lambrusco wine, balsamic vinegar and, of course, sports cars. This is the home of Bugatti, Lamborghini, Maserati and Ferrari and our optional excursion today includes a visit to the Ferrari Museum, which boasts one of the largest collections of Ferraris on show anywhere in the world.
DAY 8 Bologna/UK
We return to the airport for the homeward flight.
