Your Itinerary
DAY 1 UK/NAPLES
We fly to Naples and transfer to Amalfi for our sevennight stay on a half board basis. We are pleased to offer you a choice of three delightful hotels.
DAYS 2 – 7 THE AMALFI COAST
Set in a chasm in the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, Amalfi is a charming town, favoured by Edwardian Britons as a winter resort. At the heart of the town is the main square, overlooked by the wonderful cathedral, its riotous facade topped by a tiled cupola. Take a stroll along the cobbled lanes that radiate from the piazza, lined with charming shops selling local specialities – you’ll be tempted by the vibrant red dried chillies and startlingly yellow bottles of limoncello hanging in the doorways. Absorb the town’s relaxed atmosphere and perhaps enjoy a lunch of freshly caught fish in a local restaurant, or linger over a coffee in one of the charming cafes overlooking the main square. Join our included excursion during your stay:
RAVELLO (half day)
So stunning is Ravello’s setting, suspended 350 metres above the sea, that many of the well-known images you will see of the Amalfi Coast are taken from here. Take a stroll through the village to the Villa Cimbrone, known for its glorious gardens that lead down to a belvedere offering superb views over the coast. Whilst here, you may also like to visit the lush gardens of the Villa Rufolo. Wagner was so enamoured with the place that he based part of his opera Parsifal on it. Today, the gardens play host to wonderful open-air classical concerts during the summer and offer an unparalleled vista along the coast.
To see more of this beautiful area, an inspiring choice of optional excursions will also be available:
CAPRI (full day)
We journey by boat across the Bay of Naples to the beautiful, mountainous island of Capri. Wander through the maze of whitewashed houses in the delightful village of Anacapri, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, and visit the Villa San Michele for spectacular views.
POMPEII AND SORRENTO (full day)
Take a glimpse into Roman life in 1st-century Italy in Pompeii, the city so cruelly enveloped by ash when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. Explore the chariot-worn streets, see the huge amphitheatre and admire the beautifully frescoed villas, well preserved for hundreds of years by the ash and pumice. We continue to Sorrento, a delightful resort standing on a dramatic line of 150-foot cliffs looking out over the Bay of Naples.
BOAT TRIP TO POSITANO (half day)
We take to the water today and enjoy a trip by boat to the exclusive resort of Positano. We’ll be treated to spectacular views of the coastline en route, as the approach to the town is truly beautiful. The pastel coloured houses appear to be stacked on top of each other and crowned by the green and yellow majolica dome of the impressive Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
PAESTUM (¾ day)
Founded in the 7th century BC by the Greeks, Paestum expressed its power in the building of three massive Doric temples, and our excursion offers the chance to visit their graceful ruins. Excavations have also revealed other parts of the city, and a fascinating museum displays many findings including sculptures and tomb paintings.
HERCULANEUM (half day)
Although less famous than its neighbour Pompeii, Herculaneum is considered the most evocative of Italy’s archaeological sites. We’ll find superbly preserved houses decorated with fine mosaics and frescoes, all covered by the eruption of Vesuvius and now painstakingly excavated, giving us an insight into the lives of the wealthy former inhabitants.
DAY 8 NAPLES/UK
We return to Naples airport for the homeward flight.
