Your Itinerary
DAY 1 London/Thessaloniki
We fly to Thessaloniki and transfer to our hotel on the outskirts of Nea Moudania, our base for the next seven nights. Enjoy a welcome drink on arrival.
DAYS 2 – 7 Nea Moudania
Free to relax and enjoy your surroundings.
The following walk is included:
Moudania Market (half day) - Join us for a walk into the town of Nea Moudania, a pretty town with a lovely harbour that is also home to the largest market in Halkidiki. It’s a pleasure just to stroll around and enjoy the bustle of the market before retiring to one of the many waterfront cafes to enjoy a drink. The town also offers plenty of excellent shops for you to browse in.
During your stay we offer the following optional excursions to help you make the most of your time here:
Thessaloniki (full day) - We visit the capital of Macedonia, which is one of the oldest cities in Europe. This is the second-largest city in Greece, home to some superb reminders of its long and distinguished history, and still an important port. Ancient monasteries, Roman palaces, Byzantine architecture and outstanding museums lend the city a cultured, dignified air. We include a short sightseeing tour with a local guide to see such sights as the Church of St Dimitrios, the archaeological museum and the ancient city walls. After an included lunch you are free to explore the delightful old town or perhaps stroll down to the harbour front before returning to the hotel.
Mount Holomondas (full day) - As we travel through the evergreen forests that cover the slopes around Mount Holomondas on this delightful scenic tour, we gain an insight into Halkidiki’s traditional rural way of life. Along the way we stop in traditional coffee houses and tavernas to meet the local people.
Sithonia Peninsula (full day) - Sithonia is the middle of the three peninsulas that make up the ‘fingers’ of Halkidiki, bounded by the clear blue waters of the Toronean Gulf to the east side and the Singitic Gulf to the west. Known for its unspoilt character, the wild and natural beauty of its spectacular mountainous terrain, glorious beaches, charming little ports and picturesque villages, the region blends outstanding scenery, traditional attractions and welcoming hospitality with a host of contemporary pleasures and amenities. This fascinating excursion takes us through forests and ancient villages, offering wonderful views of the coastline and sea.
Petralona Caves (half day) - The Petralona Caves were discovered in 1959 and found fame a year later after the discovery of an ancient human skull, which has been claimed as the earliest example of modern human remains found in Europe. Whilst the precise age of the skull is a matter of debate, it is certainly many thousands of years old, and the discovery of animal bones and other artefacts has shed light on the lives of early humans in the region. The caves themselves boast an impressive number of stalagmites and stalactites, and make for a fascinating visit.
DAY 8 Thessaloniki/London
We transfer to the airport for the flight home.
