Your Itinerary
DAY 1 UK/Venice
We fly to Venice and take the short transfer to Portogruaro where we stay for five nights. As yet undiscovered by tourism, this beautiful Venetian-style town is a real Italian gem. Dinner is included in a local restaurant on our first evening, and our Tour Manager will be pleased to make suggestions for the other nights.
DAYS 2 – 5 Portogruaro
This pretty little town is an elegant mix of mediaeval and Renaissance architecture. Graceful bridges span the shimmering canals, while waterfront porticoed buildings house tempting shops.
One excursion is included during your stay:
Aquileia & Grado (¾ day)
Once one of the most important cities in Roman Italy, Aquileia’s wealth is evident in its archaeological remains. We visit the basilica, only recently rediscovered, with beautiful mosaics carpeting the length of its nave. Our excursion continues to pretty Grado, set on a number of small islands. Much of its charm comes from the warm waters that lap against its sandy beaches – you may like to relax with a drink and watch the world go by.
A number of optional excursions are also available:
Venice (full day)
Enjoy an included excursion to Venice, the wonderfully romantic city of shimmering waterways, pastel palaces and historic churches.
Padua & the Brenta Riviera (full day)
We visit Padua to see the beautiful Basilica of St Anthony and the graceful piazzas and palaces of the mediaeval centre. We continue to the stately villas of the Brenta Riviera, originally built along the banks of the Brenta Canal as summer retreats for the Venetian aristocracy, then make a stop at the Villa Pisani, built for a Venetian Doge in the 18th century and later owned by Napoleon.
Countryside tour (half day)
Take a tour of the gentle Venetian countryside, including a tasting of some of the excellent local wines.
DAY 6 Rovinj
Today we leave the Veneto behind and depart for Croatia and the pretty town of Rovinj, one of the jewels of the Croatian coast. We stop in Miramare en route to visit the lovely castle gardens. The castle was built for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian. We also stop in Trieste, set between the sparkling waters of the Adriatic and a limestone plateau before crossing the border into Slovenia and continuing on to Croatia and our hotel in Rovinj for a five-night stay.
DAYS 7 – 10 Rovinj & the Istrian Coast
One of the most beautiful towns on the Adriatic’s Istrian coast, Rovinj was ruled by the Venetians for 500 years and has been a popular resort since the days of the Austro- Hungarian Empire. Today, its charming old town is a warren of narrow streets, squares and welcoming cafes overlooking the colourful fishing harbour. Dominating the town is the Cathedral of St Euphemia, a massive baroque building perched on a hill top.
Enjoy the resort’s facilities and choose from the following optional excursions:
Pula (half day)
Ancient Pula was allegedly founded by sailors returning from a failed mission to find the Golden Fleece. A Roman amphitheatre overlooks the harbour, while golden city gates lead to the fascinating main street.
Lim Fjord & fish picnic (full day)
An unforgettable coastal cruise brings us to the stunning Lim Fjord. Practically inaccessible by land, this scenic fjord creates an unspoilt environment for the Mediterranean flora and fauna. A fish picnic is included today, prepared by our friendly crew.
Brioni Island (full day)
We travel by coach to Fazana, and then by private boat to the island of Brioni, famous for its wildlife and attractive national park. It is also the site of the summer residence of former President Tito.
DAY 11 Venice/UK
Our holiday comes to an end with the transfer back to Venice for the homeward flight.
