DAYS 1 & 2 UK/Beijing
We fly overnight via Frankfurt to Beijing. We transfer to our centrally located hotel on Day 2 and check in.
DAY 3 Beijing
We enjoy a full-day tour of this vibrant city today, starting with Tiananmen Square. This 100- acre expanse is the largest public square in the world. From here we enter the Forbidden City, the ancient palace at the centre of modern Beijing. Within its walls lies a complex of courtyards, public halls, pavilions, palaces and museums, and beyond them, the imperial family’s private apartments.
We experience the city’s maze of alleys and streets with a rickshaw ride before lunch and this afternoon we visit the Temple of Heaven – a striking wooden monument built in the 15th century. It was used by the Emperor on just one day a year to pray for a good harvest. Attend an optional Kung Fu show this evening.
DAY 4 Great Wall & Ming Tombs
Travel out of the city to the famous Great Wall. Here we have the opportunity to walk along the top of this mighty rampart. We continue to the remarkable Ming Tombs, the resting place of 13 emperors. The tombs are approached along the Sacred Way, lined on either side by colossal stone statues.
DAY 5 Beijing
We enjoy a tour of the Summer Palace today, the warm weather retreat of the Empress Dowager Ci Xi, set beside a lake in delightful parklands. In contrast, the most modern sights are the iconic Olympic buildings. These include the National Aquatics Centre, better known as the Water Cube, and the National Stadium, better known as the Bird’s Nest. Enjoy a special banquet this evening, featuring Peking Duck.
DAY 6 Xian
Fly to Xian, once the capital of China and the most important city in Asia, where we enjoy a two-night stay. En route to the hotel we visit the Hangyangling Tomb and ancient city wall.
DAY 7 Xian & the Terracotta Army
Spend the whole day discovering the sights, including the sevenstorey Big Wild Goose Pagoda built in 1580, the graceful Bell Tower and the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di, home to the fabulous Terracotta Army. Tonight a traditional Dumpling Banquet is accompanied by a Tang Dynasty cultural show.
DAY 8 Nanjing
We fly to Nanjing today and on arrival, transfer to our hotel. The rest of the day is spent exploring the many sights, including the impressive Yangtze River Bridge, the Confucius Temple and the Qinhuaihe River.
DAY 9 Suzhou
This morning we enjoy a tour of the magnificent Sun Yetsen’s Mausoleum with its remarkable stairway. We then board the train for the journey through rural farmlands and paddy fields to Suzhou, a cultural city renowned for its classical Chinese gardens, traditional houses and humpback bridges arching over willow-tree lined canals.
DAY 10 Suzhou
As part of our exploration of this beautiful city we visit the stunning Humble Administrator’s Garden and the Silk Embroidery Institute, where you can buy brilliantly coloured Chinese silks. This region has been famous for its silk products since the days of Marco Polo. Later we enjoy a cruise on the Grand Canal, taking in all the sights of the city.
DAY 11 Hangzhou
After breakfast we visit the water town of Wuzhen and enjoy a boat ride on the river. We then transfer to Hangzhou, which Marco Polo once described as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
DAY 12 Hangzhou & Shanghai
We enjoy a relaxing boat ride on the famous West Lake this morning, taking in all the beautiful scenery. This serene lake is surrounded by forests and gardens and features a number of picturesque islands. We also visit the Temple of Soul Retreat and a Tea Plantation before continuing by rail to Shanghai.
DAY 13 Shanghai
Today we have a full-day tour of Shanghai’s sights. See the art deco banks and hotels on the waterfront Bund, the Chinese art treasures of the Shanghai Museum, bustling Nanjing Road and enjoy a boat ride along the Huangpujiang River. This evening, you can attend a performance by the amazing Shanghai acrobats.
DAY 14 Hong Kong
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Hong Kong. On arrival transfer to your hotel where four nights’ accommodation has been reserved for you.
DAY 15 Hong Kong
Included tour of Hong Kong featuring Victoria Peak, Repulse Bay and Aberdeen Harbour. The afternoon is free to relax or shop for bargains.
DAYS 16 & 17 Hong Kong
Day free in Hong Kong with a variety of optional excursions on offer.
DAY 18 Hong Kong/UK
Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
