Your Itinerary

DAY 1 UK/Washington DC

We fly to Washington DC and on arrival transfer to our hotel in the suburbs of the city for an overnight stay.

DAY 2 Shenandoah, Blue Ridge Mountains & Monticello

Today we travel to Shenandoah and visit the impressive National Park, with its dense forests and abundant wildlife. We journey along the Shenandoah National Park’s famous Skyline Drive, admiring the marvellous views at every turn. We travel on into the spectacularly rugged landscapes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Blazes of wildflowers and cascading waterfalls make this some of Virginia’s most inspiring scenery.

From here, we head to Monticello, the magnificent mountain-top home and plantation of Thomas Jefferson, former American president and author of the Declaration of Independence. The house and gardens were designed and built by Jefferson in the popular Neoclassical style of the day, very much like the Palladian villas found in Europe. Our day ends in Richmond, where we stay for the next two nights.

DAY 3 Jamestown & Williamsburg

Today we visit Jamestown, where the first British settlers in the New World came ashore in 1607. Life-size replicas of their three tiny ships give an indication of the hardships of their voyage. We continue to Williamsburg, the capital of colonial Virginia, and see the meticulously restored houses, workshops and taverns, ‘occupied’ by knowledgeable guides in period dress, living life as it would have been in the 18th century, before travelling to the Berkeley Plantation, where the first official Thanksgiving was held in 1619.

DAY 4 Washington DC

We return to Washington DC today. A city purpose-built to be the capital and seat of government, Washington DC has a wealth of imposing buildings and notable landmarks, from the vast dome of the Capitol to the White House; the Washington Monument to the temple-like Lincoln Memorial. A morning tour gives us a great overview of the key sights to be found here. The afternoon is a perfect opportunity to see some of the city’s fantastic museums, or visit the Ford Theatre, where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. You can also enjoy an optional tour of Washington DC by night for an alternative view of the city.

DAY 5 Philadelphia

Enjoy a morning at leisure to make your own discoveries of Washington DC before journeying to Philadelphia for an overnight stay. Here we pay a visit to the birthplace of American nationhood, where Franklin and Jefferson led the movement towards independence. We see Independence Hall, where the Declaration was signed, and the Liberty Bell, which was tolled to acclaim it.

DAY 6 New York

Our final journey of this wonderful tour takes us to New York – a truly irresistible 24-hour city. We stay here for the next two nights. On arrival we enjoy an introductory tour of some of Manhattan’s most famous sights, such as Broadway, Times Square, the Empire State Building, Central Park, the Financial District and the Rockefeller Centre. For your evening entertainment, why not go for dinner and take in a show? There are many smash hit Broadway shows to choose from and, of course, New York is renowned for its fantastic variety of restaurants.

DAY 7 New York

You are at leisure in the city that never sleeps. Why not do a little more sightseeing, perhaps taking in one or two of New York’s famous museums, head to the shops for some retail therapy, or join one of the optional excursions on offer. These optional excursions include helicopter flights over the city for spectacular views and a cruise around the harbour, taking in sights such as Ellis Island and the simply iconic Statue of Liberty, presented to the American people by France in 1886.

DAYS 8 & 9 New York/UK

Enjoy a further free morning in the ‘Big Apple’ before transferring to the airport for your return flight to the UK, arriving the following day.
