Your Itinerary

DAY 1 UK/Los Angeles

We fly to Los Angeles and transfer to our hotel for an overnight stay.

DAY 2 Los Angeles & San Diego

LA is an outrageous amalgam of almost a hundred townships sprawling over 4,000 square miles, and is of course home to the Hollywood Movie Industry. Discover Mann’s Chinese Theatre and Hollywood Boulevard on our included city tour before we head to San Diego. California’s second largest city, San Diego is bordered by the Anza-Borrego Desert, the Pacific Ocean, Mexico and the Laguna Mountains. This spectacular setting, along with its marked Spanish influence, makes it a delightful place to explore.

DAY 3 Santa Barbara

Leaving San Diego behind, we join the Pacific Surfliner train to Santa Barbara. Our journey takes us through Los Angeles and along the coast before arriving in the glorious city of Santa Barbara in the afternoon.

DAY 4 Santa Barbara

Nestled between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Santa Barbara is often referred to as the American Riviera. Miles of sandy beaches, cafe-lined streets and a mix of cultural influences, all characterise this city. It has, for many years, been a favoured holiday destination for the rich and famous and is a delight to explore. An optional city tour will show you the best it has to offer.

DAY 5 San Francisco

We join the Coast Starlight train today for our journey to San Francisco. Sit back and enjoy the ride as we enjoy lunch on board and watch the picturesque scenery pass by the window.

DAY 6 San Francisco

This is one of the world’s most beautiful cities, famous for its superb bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, street cable cars and Fisherman’s Wharf. Today is free for you to fully explore this delightful city. Or why not join our optional city tour which will take you to all the major sights, including the infamous prison on the island of Alcatraz – once home to the notorious Al Capone.

DAY 7 Napa Valley

Today we enjoy an excursion to the Napa Valley. This is California’s celebrated wine country. Rows of beautifully manicured vineyards on rolling hillsides; picturesque valley floors; neat, welcoming communities such as St Helena and Calistoga; and world-famous names on all sides. This gentle and idyllic region is unmissable and we’ll see it all from the comfort of our seats as we take a ride on the beautiful Napa Valley Wine Train. This lovingly restored Pullman train offers a very traditional rail experience, as well as being one of the regions best, and certainly most unique, restaurants. We enjoy a wine tasting prior to boarding the train. A gourmet lunch will be served onboard.

DAY 8 Monterey

Experience the enchanting redwood forests as we travel by steam train from Monterey. Trains have been carrying tourists to see the redwoods and beaches along this route for over 100 years and the Roaring Camp Railroad train we travel on is one of the best preserved narrow gauge steam trains from this time. We will travel to the summit of Bear Mountain and explore Roaring Camp.

DAY 9 Mariposa

We leave San Francisco behind today and travel to Mariposa, where we will stay for the next two nights.

DAY 10 Yosemite Valley

Made by glaciers as they gouged their way through the canyon of the Merced River, the Yosemite Valley is stunning. We enjoy a tour of the valley, taking in this paradise of waterfalls, trails, lakes, dramatic mountain peaks and the famous halfdomed mountain. It’s then time to board the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad for a historic journey through the Sierra National Forest, on the same tracks that these trains once hauled timber. Sit back and enjoy the experience and the views. A barbecue lunch is included.

DAY 11 Sacramento

We travel to Sacramento today with the afternoon at leisure.

DAY 12 Sacramento

This cosmopolitan, modern city and state capital retains much of its Gold Rush history and we have the opportunity to explore its many delights today on an included excursion. Later, a visit will be made to the California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento.

DAYS 13 & 14 San Francisco/UK

We leave Sacramento this morning for San Francisco airport and the return flight to the UK. We will arrive the following day.
