Your Itinerary
DAY 1 UK/Boston
We fly to Boston and transfer to our hotel in the suburbs of Boston. We stay on a room only basis at the Holiday Inn Woburn for the next two nights.
DAY 2 Boston
Today we head into Boston – the principal city of New England. So much of Boston’s revolutionary past has been preserved and we will see historic architecture set against modern buildings and the vibrant harbour. We’ll follow parts of the famous Freedom Trail, including Boston Common, the gold dome of the Massachusetts State House, Paul Revere’s House and a drive across the Charles River. This afternoon we will have some free time to enjoy this wonderful city independently.
DAY 3 New Hampshire & Lincoln
We travel northwards today, enjoying the countryside views as we approach New Hampshire and Lincoln, where we stay for the next three nights.
DAY 4 The White Mountains
Explore the stunning scenery of the White Mountains today including Indian Head, a rock formation that once served as a tribal look-out, and Franconia Notch State Park. Take a thrilling optional ride on the aerial tramway to the summit of Mount Cannon. We continue to Crawford Notch where more scenic splendours await with Mount Washington – the highest peak in the eastern USA. Our day ends with some time to spend in the factory outlets of Conway – great value for money as there’s no sales tax in New Hampshire. We return to our hotel along the scenic Kancamagus Highway.
DAY 5 Vermont
To see another side of New England, take our optional excursion to the Green Mountains of Vermont, one of America’s prettiest states. We see Montpelier, the smallest state capital in the USA, and learn how maple syrup is produced at Morse Farm. Fortified by the local speciality “sugar on snow” – hot maple syrup drizzled over ice shavings – we visit Rock of Ages, the world’s largest granite quarry, from where the stone for Montpelier’s state capitol building was hewn.
DAY 6 Cape Cod
This morning we depart the White Mountains for our journey southwards to Cape Cod. We stop en route for a guided tour of Canterbury Shaker Village, which is a museum consisting of several restored and reconstructed Shaker buildings set amongst acres of beautiful grounds. Later this afternoon we arrive in Falmouth for a three-night stay.
DAY 7 Provincetown & Whale-Watching
We see more of Cape Cod’s beautiful coastline, wonderful beaches, windswept dunes and charming colonial fishing villages today as we travel north to Provincetown, a busy fishing port with narrow winding streets of picturesque clapboard houses, shops and galleries. Take a stroll, climb the Pilgrim Memorial tower for a fantastic overview of the entire Cape or there’s an optional whale watching cruise (weather permitting).
DAY 8 Rhode Island
Today there is an optional excursion to Rhode Island, the smallest state in the nation. Despite its size, it boasts more than 400 miles of coastline and a fifth of the entire country’s historic landmarks. Summering in Newport, Rhode Island, popular since pre-Revolution times, became the done thing for 19th-century millionaires and socialites, who tried to outdo each other with their palatial summer ‘cottages’. Some 70 mansions survive, including the Astor family’s and Cornelius Vanderbilt’s 70-room Italian Renaissancestyle palace. We visit one of these famous mansions, which are now museums.
DAYS 9 & 10 Boston/UK
This morning we visit the replica of the Mayflower which carried the pilgrims across the Atlantic in 1620. We then continue to the fascinating Plimoth Plantation site – a recreation of the Pilgrim father’s 1627 village and the older Wampanoag settlement. Costumed actors portraying the pilgrims and descendants of the Wampanoag tribe will answer your questions. We then continue to Boston airport for our return flight to the UK, arriving the next day.
